Boyd Bear Complex

So we’ve had this problem that our CrossFit laundry is too sweaty to even put in the laundry basket. That’s a common issue, right? I know the average person would probably just put them straight in the washer. But our laundry is in the basement. And after we’ve done like 1000 push-ups and 900 squats, we’re not about to take any extraneous steps!!!

Our solution:

his hers crossfit crunch can umbra

Aren’t they adorable? They’re “crunch cans” from The Container Store. If you go there, you can find them in the “back to college” section. Haha. It was funny, I saw them online and we had to explain to a male employee what ombré was. Boys!!

essie fiesta padicure manicure

I got a mani/pedi yesterday!! Huge chore. Ever since living in the DR, I’ve become addicted to having my nails done. And no, there’s no chance of me EVER being able to do them myself. I just hate taking the time to go and sitting there for an hour!! Plus now I have the added bonus that the manicurist is always asking me,”What happened to you?!!!!!” I know she thinks Kevin beats me because I’m always so bruised and scraped up. I told her “sports” because sometimes CrossFit is just too hard to explain.

Isn’t doing yoga so much more fun if your nails are done?!?! Seriously. It makes the experience 10x better. If you’re holding a pose, you can just stare at your beautiful nails. Essie Fiesta, by the way!!!!

I know I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ve been doing Travis Eliot Short & Sweet — and it’s like a match made in heaven for CrossFit mobility. You know it’s good because it’s out of stock, and the used versions are selling for $60+. I bet this newer one is good too though.

IT TICKLES!!!!!!!! I had a little almond butter on my hands.

Now let’s talk workouts!! Because that’s my favorite topic these days. If it’s not yours, begin skimming!

I was excited when I saw it on the board because I’ve read about it on the internetz. It’s a fun little combo:

  • Power Clean
  • Front Squat
  • Push-Press
  • Back Squat
  • Push-Press

All in one move. It looks like this. Pretty crazy. Right away I knew I was nervous about push pressing the bar overhead and putting it on my back. I’ve never done that before, and I’m honestly still just getting comfortable with that bar. Unfortunately, it was a super full class this morning — one of the biggest ever — so I didn’t get to ask as many questions as I would like. Most of our classes are less than 10, and I can just give my coach a confused squinty look and he’ll come over and help me out. In this case, he did come over — right when I did a bad rep. Of course! Don’t they always? So he wanted me to lower my weight!! I was planning to still go higher. But I trust my coach not to hurt me. So I listened. I did the first round at 50lbs. It was almost laughably easy. My coach noticed and put me back up at 60 which was still really easy.

First time I’ve ever finished a CrossFit workout without even really breathing hard. I also realized afterwards that I was doing a lot of extra squats. I was basically doing two front squats every time through the complex because I would squat when I cleaned the bar as well. Oops. I was in the back of the room or I’m sure I would’ve been called out on that, but it was okay. The worst that happened is that I got a few extra squats in, right?? So I was really disappointed with that workout just because it felt so easy .Kevin said I should stay for the 7AM and try again. Haha. Tempting! I know I’m lame. Who gets this bummed when a workout is too easy?

Instead, I went home and did 20 minutes AMRAP 5 pull-ups (with one band), 10 push-ups, 15 squats. Mostly just to practice my pull-ups. Score: 6+2 It was like a slow-mo version of Cindy!

justin's almond butter cookies

Last night I made 7 cookies. It was one of those things where I used all “healthy” ingredients to make something that’s really not that healthy. But if you’re curious — 1/2 cup Justin’s Almond Butter + 1 egg + 2 TBSP coconut flour + salt + vanilla + mini Enjoy LIfe choc chips. That made 7 cookies, but it was a pretty scant 1/2 cup of nut butter because I was out. They turned out to be 113 calories, 9g fat, 4g protein, 5g sugar. They weren’t the sweetest things ever, but they were good and really hit the spot.

boyd almond butter

Boyd is going paleo and only likes expensive almond butters now!!! Haha. Seriously, I made that dog wait, and he stalked me for an hour. He knew that jar was empty!!!!

What would you rather have — a free pedicure or someone to do your laundry for a whole week?? Pedicure. There’s always Zappos if you run out of workout clothes — they have free next day delivery. Haha. Just kidding. Fun fact — did you know that my roommates and I had a maid who did our laundry when we lived in the DR? Our washing machine was crazy though! I never learned how to use it in 3 years — it had a mind of its own and would like drain all over the floor. Another fun fact? Once a giant rat ate one of the little water tubes!!!

Do you get disappointed if a workout is too easy? Yes. But it is a great time to focus on your form.
